In many parts of the world, Eared Grebes are common and easy to find. There are populations around the world, including one that nests in western North America.

I heard the distinctive nasal call of a Red-breasted Nuthatch this week in York County - an indication that these birds will probably be visiting our bird feeders this winter.

I found this flock of House Sparrows in a patch of dust along the side of the road at the beginning of August. It was an entertaining scene.

This juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron was a pleasant surprise. I was bird watching along the Susquehanna River when I found the heron perched on the hood of my car.

Listen in Pennsylvania's forests during the summer, and you may hear the persistent song of the Black-throated Green Warbler. 

This week we visited Monticello, the historic site and former home of Thomas Jefferson, and met "Rob," an enterprising American Robin.
